good morning.

BOO

  • in a “DEI purge” over 300 books have been banned from the Naval Academy Library.

  • the aptly-named gem of a wine bar Gem Wine has closed. my friend Eloïse introduced me to this tiny spot on the LES on a spring night a few years ago, and I instantly fell in love with its communal tables and pretty yellow light.. I was heartbroken to learn of its closure.

YESS

  • at last, the urgently-needed Instagram-equivalent to the video editing app CapCut is coming 30 April.

  • Goodnight, Moon postage stamps will be rolled out 2 May. wish I could quit my job to write love letters and mail them with a sweet sleepy rabbit stamp.

  • among the big trends at NY Bridal Fashion Week are draped basque waists, colors other than white, bows, and separate sets. I was taken with many of the pieces I saw in articles about the week.. in fact, when I laid eyes on the boning and dropped waist on this strapless Andrew Kwon gown, my soul left my body (#5 in this slideshow).

  • speaking of weddings, there’s now a Mrs. @NewYorkNico. the couple had a candlelit reception dinner at Katz’s, a fitting and very successful venue choice.

MONEY

  • rallying after a week of unpredictability, American markets closed up yesterday. the Dow gaind 1.56%, the S&P 500 1.81%, and the NASDAQ 2.06%.

  • the word on researchers’ lips amidst this tariff turmoil, according to Bloomberg, is STAGFLATION. the name suggests it’s a doozy, but in case you’re not sure what exactly it is I’ll break it down for you:

    • stagflation is a combination of “stagnation” (as it relates to economic growth) and “inflation.” the circumstance arises under three conditions:

      • (1) a country’s economic growth has slowed, or even turned negative.

      • (2) in response to slowing growth, hiring slows down and layoffs might even begin, increasing the unemployment rate.

      • (3) prices continue to rise for consumers in an economy with diminished growth and rising unemployment.

a sort of impasse is produced because the typical solutions to economic growth (say, lowering interest rates or increasing government investments) are often inflationary while, conversely, the typical solutions to inflation (increasing interest rates) curb economic growth and employment.

    • so, why are researchers worried about it now ? because, of course, of tariffs. a sweeping tax on imports can cause our economy to stagnate AND inflate. stagnation might happen for any number of reasons, for example: uncertainty causes businesses to operate with the short-term in mind more than the long, higher prices diminish consumers’ purchasing power, or even because higher costs for businesses mean reduced production. inflation meanwhile, may be caused when increased prices of imports pushes production cost up, for example.

MIAM

  • yesterday was a beautiful evening so I rode the metro to Oberkampf for a scoop of richly creamy olive oil ice cream and a glass of Alsatian orange wine, fulfilling my dreams of how I’d spend Fridays once I moved here. the wine, Domaine Achillée Pinot Gris Macéré 2021, reminded me of apricot in taste (honeyed fruit) and acidity level (minimal). the funkiness so typical of orange wines showed up in this glass as an enticing, fresh minerality. I enjoyed it, especially as a pairing with the silky olive oil flavor of the ice cream.

  • the longest food lines in NYC have been ranked. Radio Bakery made the list for good reason- the other day I waited on line TWICE because they forgot to give me the rhubarb pastry I asked for my first go around. L’Industrie and Lucali also made the list, but the number one spot went to Lechonera La Piraña, run out of a trailer in Mott Haven. that feels like a marginally contrary, how-niche-can-you-go pick, but then again, I’m no food critic.

BOP

  • ‘Это Любовь,’ by Peremotka.

  • “die for someone” by 9lives w adore.

SCREENS

  • big weekend for television: the final season of Handmaid’s Tale, new Black Mirror, and the second installment of The Last of Us are all out.

have a good day
