good morning.
BOO
backlash against American tourists has begun ! I feel desperate to closet the qualities that reveal me as American, but even more desperate to tell all my countrymen on vacation here to clean up their acts. behave less like vacationers and more like delegates of a commission.
the first weekend of Coachella kicked off yesterday, and various news outlets are already buzzing with the best of celebrity outfits. as I read through the third such article I’d seen, I came to a conclusion that growing up on Tumblr in the early 2010s barred me from seeing clearly: festival wear is lame. everyone looks like they’re at a warm weather Halloween party. still, I enjoy these 2014 Coachella posts. unfortunately, outfits just hit different before people collectively decided cultural appropriation was not allowed.
YESS
the New York Rangers suck so bad that between periods during yesterday’s matinee, hockey royalty/current commentator Mark Messier presented a slide called “Repairing the Rangers.” he cited a lot of issues with the team’s culture like the lack of a captain and a failure to promote youth into leadership roles. it’s awful watching them this season, especially considering what an exciting shot at the Stanley Cup they had last year.
the skincare/cosmetics brand Rhode, owned by Hailey Bieber, has reportedly hired investment bankers at JP Morgan to explore selling for $1bn. in a turbulent economic climate, this sale has the potential to disrupt the relatively recent slowdown of mergers and acquisitions in the beauty space.
MONEY
some young women’s behaviors are being scrutinized as recession indicators, like dyeing hair less, not taking Ubers, and opting for press-ons. the hair and Uber habits apply less to me, but baby, I can promise you if I stop spending manicure money it’s because the recession was so bad it became a depression wherein I died of starvation and therefore can no longer make an appointment for my nails.
MIAM
I tried my first syrah since I began my studies and I cannot stop thinking about it. everything about this 2023 wine, from a winery in the Rhône felt mysterious to me: on sight, it was a beautiful purplish color. the striking note on the nose was musk at first, but after a little time in the glass that dissipated, evolving into a distinctly clove-forward spicy smell. the taste was only gently tannic with a firm body and medium length in the mouth. I loved everything about this wine: the unexpected nose, its structure, how it would not be incorrect to describe it as savory.
BOP
“Suddenly” and “Big Empty Country” by Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe.
have a good day ★
