the FT’s Rules for Modern Dining are nothing novel, and here’s the issue with that: people who are reading the Financial Times in their leisure are not the same people who must be told things like “you can ask for things to be taken off your plate, but not to have things put on it.” if one is to make a rulebook for something like eating, it must be full of thoughtful (revelatory) insight. otherwise, don’t busy the airwaves with platitudes.
in the same breath, I’d like to bring up the bossiness of restaurants, ie: What it’s all about. Noble Rot tackles the question in its most recent edition, coming down ultimately in favor of restaurants laying out on their site exactly what to expect from them and who they don’t want you to be.
